European anthems to bring us together

Music is present everywhere, even within the grandest sports events throughout the world. Some of the songs performed at events like Super Bowl, World Cup and UEFA are forever remembered and makes deep impressions on people’s hearts. Since the world has stood still during the pandemic, and we have seen so many people lose their lives, events like those and the music accompanying has come to mean even more.

If there is one event that we are looking forward to most it is UEFA EURO 2020, that is planned to be staged during the summer this year. During the years, UEFA EURO has been not only an event for the greatest European football teams to join in, but also an event where acclaimed artists have been able to perform theme songs.

Everyone seems to be thrilled about the event, from adults to kids, sport enthusiasts to dedicated football players and music lovers like us. It is after all an event that moves us in many different ways. A historical review of UEFA EURO anthems

Sweden had the honour to represent UEFA EURO’s first edition with the song “More Than a Game”, performed by Towe Jaarnek and Peter Jöback 1992. The years thereafter Simply Red (1996), E-Type (2000), Nelly Furtado (2004), Enrique Iglesias (2008), Oceana (2016) and David Guetta & Zara Larsson (2016). These performances will probably forever be remembered and honoured, almost like the hits during Eurovision.

For UEFA EURO 2021 we have been promised a performance by world famous DJ and producer Martin Garrix featuring everyone’s favourite Bono as well as U2 band member David Howell Evans (The Edge). The song is named “We Are The People”.

In an interview with UEFA Garrix says that “It’s an incredible honour to be asked to create the official song for UEFA EURO 2020 and I am so excited to let everyone hear it”. What we are the most excited about might however be both U2 members Bono and The Edge featuring. We already know that they are suckers for football since their anthem “Beautiful Day” which has been used widely as a soccer theme song on foremost British television.

Why music has come to mean so much

What is it that makes anthems such as “We Are The People” so important for the world? Why are we not just focused on the actual games? We are no experts, but we know that music moves us. Music is a way to express emotions, such as sports are for many. At the same time music makes us excited, it makes us move. Otherwise going to a club would be pretty boring.

That is to say that watching the UEFA EURO, and other sport events, would probably not be as interesting if it were not for the music that was there. It creates an atmosphere, an atmosphere that brings us together – showing that “we are the people”. Even though there are waters and lands separating us, we are all affected by the same things on a global level, such as the pandemic that no country managed to dodge.
